Belvedere Cheneil
An easy (snowshoes) walk from Cheneil to the Punta Fontana Fredda (2,513m) and Belvedere Cheneil viewpoint delights hikers with panoramic views over the Matterhorn and the Grandes Murailles as well as over the adjoining peaks: Monte Roisetta and Grand Tournalin.
The trail sets off from the parking area below Cheneil. It is advised to arrive early because many free ride enthusiasts arrive here during the day. There's a convenient and completely free elevator from the parking area to the village of Cheneil.
At the top level of the elevator, you get immediately exposed to Matterhorn views. In Italy, Matterhorn is called Cervino.
I met a very hairy sweet pony in the village of Cheneil. It was so adorable and very friendly! Pony’s lush fur coat just tells you that people and animals should stay warm during the cold winter season.
The higher you ascend the better views over Matterhorn you get.
About halfway to the summit of Punta Fontana Fredda (literally, a tip of a cold fountain) trees disappear and free ride skiers paradise begins. To the left of Matterhorn, there is the Grandes Murailles chain.
After a long uphill walk, we reach Colle di Fontana Fredda just near one of the ski slopes. Snowshoes don't provide enough sturdiness to mountain ski but they let you go up for the great views!
Santuario de la Clavalité is located near the ski-lift station and could be reached as well.
Finally, we arrive to the viewpoint where you can have a small lunch as a reward and enjoy the stunningly beautiful view over the Matterhorn and the Grandes Murailles as well as over the adjoining peaks: Monte Roisetta and Grand Tournalin.
